Benjamin Piccolo returned to SIGAR in April 2024 as the Assistant Inspector General for Audits and Inspections (AIG A&I). As AIG A&I, Benjamin leads the agency’s team of auditors and program analysts located at SIGAR’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and previously deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan. Benjamin is responsible for ensuring the production of high-quality and timely audit and inspection reports and other products that comply with government auditing and inspection standards, support Congress in its oversight of U.S.-funded Afghan reconstruction programs and provide actionable recommendations to the agencies implementing those programs.
Benjamin first joined SIGAR as the AIG A&I in September 2011 and served in that role until February 2013. During his time as the AIG A&I, he chaired the Joint Strategic Audit Planning Group, which included members from DODIG, State IG and USAID IG and he developed the first Joint Strategic Oversight Plan for Afghanistan. Benjamin returned to SIGAR as the Director of Special Projects from October 2018 to January 2021. In addition to his time at SIGAR, Benjamin was the Chief Operating Officer of a consulting company offering financial management consulting services to the Department of Defense and started a tax and accounting business.
Prior to joining SIGAR is September 2011, Benjamin spent 32 years with the Army Audit Agency, where he progressed from an auditor trainee to the Principal Deputy Auditor General. In this latter role, Benjamin oversaw all aspects of audit operations to include doing an Army-wide risk assessment, developing an internal audit plan for the Army, and managing day-to-day operations of a 600-person professional audit organization.
