U.S. Reconstruction Funding for Afghanistan Approaching $100 Billion Since 2002

President's Budget Request a 34 Percent Reduction from FY 2012

As reported by SIGAR in its latest Quarterly Report, as of March 31, 2012, cumulative appropriations for relief and reconstruction in Afghanistan totaled approximately $89.42 billion. The President has requested approximately $9.7 billion in additional funding for reconstruction programs in his FY 2013 budget. This request represents a 34 percent reduction from the $14.8 billion that Congress provided in FY 2012 and reflects a change in U.S. priorities, principally in the security sector. If approved, the President's request will bring the total appropriated for Afghanistan reconstruction since 2002 to approximately $100 billion. U.S. reconstruction funding can be divided into five major categories: security; governance and development; counter-narcotics; humanitarian; and oversight and operations. Appropriations by fiscal year and funding category, and a breakdown of funding sources and agencies, are shown in the graphics below.

For more information, please see SIGAR's Fifteenth Quarterly Report, which includes a detailed statement of all obligations, expenditures, and revenues associated with reconstruction.
